The 2024 election season has officially begun in Nebraska.

Nebraskans who are planning to run for state or federal office in 2024 can begin filing with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office January 5.

Incumbent candidates have until February 15 to file, while the deadline for non-incumbents is March 1.

Candidates who do not meet the filing deadline will not appear on the primary ballot and the Elections Division says it recommends candidates file early to ensure all requirements are met.

The 2024 Candidate Filing Guide is available on the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website and provides more information on the requirements to file for different public offices.

“Our Elections Division is ready to help individuals file for office,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said in a press release. “Candidates should be mindful of deadlines and the appropriate documents needed to file for office successfully.”

County election offices will begin accepting early voting ballot requests January 15 and begin processing those requests the following day.

The May 2024 primary will also be the first statewide election to take place with Nebraska’s new Voter ID law in effect, passed by voters in November 2022.
