The recently recalled sheriff of Dundy County, Nebraska has been arrested by the Nebraska State Patrol.

After being removed from office last month, Clinton J Smith allegedly kept four pistols that were property of the Dundy County Sheriff’s Department.

In the affidavit filed in District Court to obtain a search warrant, an investigator with the Nebraska State Patrol stated the current Dundy County Sheriff discovered four of the department’s glock pistols were missing from the room where weapons are stored.

Last month voters overwhelmingly removed Clinton Smith as sheriff. He was obligated to turn in all his equipment and firearms at that time.

The new interim sheriff asked Smith about the missing pistols, but he denied knowing their whereabouts.

A search conducted Friday by the Nebraska State Patrol located one of the four guns in the former sheriff’s home in Benklemen.

Smith was arrested for theft by unlawful taking and possession of a stolen firearm. He was lodged in Dundy County Jail.

EDITORS NOTE

In an earlier version of this story, we incorrectly stated all four guns had been recovered. Only one missing firearm was found by investigators at the time.
