University of Nebraska chief financial officer Chris Kabourek is resigning effective Oct. 1. Kabourek has worked in the NU system for 27 years.

He submitted his resignation in a letter to NU President Jeffrey Gold on Monday.

“In reflecting on my time in this role, I have asked myself whether I, after serving over half my life at the University, have become too comfortable,” Kabourek wrote. “Is it time for me to get uncomfortable again?”

Kabourek has served as chief financial officer for the university since 2018. He also served as interim NU president following the departure of Ted Carter.

In that role, Kabourek helped start the President’s Scholarship program. The scholarship gives a full-ride plus a $5,000 stipend to students who score a 36 on the ACT.

“I am especially proud of welcoming the first cohort of Presidential Scholars to our campuses,” he wrote.

Kabourek also hired UNL athletic director Troy Dannen. He wrote that Dannen’s hire will “ensure Husker athletics remains competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape of college sports.”

In the letter, Kabourek said he feels confident the university is “on solid financial ground and well-positioned to continue its forward momentum.”

Anne Barnes – the current vice chancellor for business and finance at UNMC – will step in as interim CFO for the university system.
