Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers announced Tuesday he is suing four large truck manufacturers for colluding to limit production of diesel trucks in favor of electric vehicles.
Hilgers objects to the so-called Clean Truck Partnership that the manufacturers, including Daimler, Navistar, PACCAR and Volvo reached last year with the California Air Resources Board.
“What we're trying to do is tear up this agreement and allow the free market and the nation's elected representatives to determine the pace and scope of any change in our national logistics policy,” Hilgers said. "We just don't want four companies in collusion with one another, along with the federal government and states like California to dictate that for us."
Announcing the agreement last year, the manufacturers said it would help ensure an orderly process to meet air quality and climate change goals.
Hilgers filed the lawsuit in Lincoln County, where he said three of the manufacturers have sales outlets. No other states joined the lawsuit, which alleges violations of state consumer protection and antitrust laws that would increase costs for Nebraskans.
