Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers’ office on Monday filed its second lawsuit alleging a security camera company’s potential security risks and ties to the Chinese government.
The lawsuit accuses U.S.-based Resideo Technologies Inc. of deceiving consumers about serious security risks associated with video surveillance cameras sold in the state.
According to a press release, Resideo, through its ADI Global Distribution business, markets and sells surveillance cameras manufactured by Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co., both identified as national and cybersecurity risks by the U.S. government.
Hilgers’ office said Hikvision and Dahua have been subject to federal restrictions and sanctions due to their involvement in human-rights abuses and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. He said both companies risk unauthorized access to video and audio feeds for users, according to the Federal Communications Commission and Congress.
In September, Hilgers filed a similar lawsuit against Lorex Corporation and Lorex Technology Inc., which also involved cameras made by Dahua. The earlier press release stated that Dahua’s data cannot be withheld from the Chinese government under the country’s 2017 national security law.
Hilgers' office has not provided specific guidelines for Nebraskans who may use the cameras but suggested in September that people unplug the cameras if they are able and research any software patches if available.
