Much of Nebraska will be dealing with extreme heat Sunday and Monday, with the eastern part of the state expected to see the worst conditions.
The eastern third of Nebraska is in an extreme heat warning that’s scheduled to take effect at noon Sunday and last until 8 p.m. Monday.
Some areas of the eastern part of the state will see temperatures nearing 100 degrees, with heat indexes that could top 110.
For example, Lincoln is forecast to see a high of 98 Sunday and 100 Monday, with heat indexes of 110 both days. Heat indexes are forecast to hit 112 in Falls City and 113 in Columbus on Monday.
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department announced that the city will keep certain facilities open until 8 p.m. to act as cooling centers both Sunday and Monday. Those facilities are the Anderson and Bennet Martin library branches, the F Street Rec Center and the Victory Park Senior Center.
Central and western parts of Nebraska are in a heat advisory both Sunday and Monday. With lower humidity, the heat index won’t be as high, but some areas could still see very high temperatures. For example, Stockville is forecast to hit 106 on Monday, while the temperature could reach 104 in Imperial and 103 in Grant.
The extreme heat will be short-lived, however, and then a much-cooler pattern will develop.
Eastern Nebraska will still see temperatures in the mid-90s on Tuesday, but much of the rest of the state will drop into the 80s. By Wednesday, most of the state will see temperatures that are 10 to 15 degrees below normal, and those will last into the weekend.
In many areas, highs are forecast to be in the low 70s Thursday and Friday, including just 70 degrees in Kearney on both days.
