Fresh off perhaps the best season in the school’s history, Nebraska announced Monday that it has signed Fred Hoiberg to a contract extension.
“Fred Hoiberg is a tremendous representative of the University of Nebraska, the Lincoln community, and our state. We are extremely proud that he will continue to lead the Nebraska men’s basketball program well into the future,” Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said in a statement. “Fred has built this program step by step and his leadership has Nebraska positioned to continue to compete at a high level in the Big Ten Conference and nationally. Fred is one of the most respected coaches in the country by his peers, and his success has been recognized throughout the college basketball world.”
With its win over Iowa on Sunday, the Huskers finished the regular season 26-5, tying the all-time record for wins in a season. It’s the third straight year with at least 20 wins, a first for the school. Nebraska also set school records by starting the season 20-0 and winning 24 in a row going back to its championship in the College Basketball Crown postseason tournament this year.
The team also went 15-5 in conference play, winning a tie-breaker for second place. That’s the most wins ever in conference play and the school’s highest-ever finish in the Big Ten.
The new contract, which is the second one in three years, extends Hoiberg’s tenure with the Huskers through the 2031-2032 season and ups his salary to $5 million next season. from $4.35 million this season. The contract gives Hoiberg a $100,000 raise each successive year.
“I’m appreciative of the continued confidence from Troy Dannen and Jeffrey Gold and thank them for the support they have shown in our staff’s leadership of the Husker basketball program,” Hoiberg said in a statement. “We have a long family history with the University of Nebraska, and the support we have received over the last seven years is truly remarkable. We are blessed with world-class facilities, but the people are what make Nebraska special. Our goal is to continue building a program that our fans can embrace and have pride in because it represents the values of Nebraska.”
Hoiberg has an overall record of 110-113 with Nebraska, but after winning only 24 games his first three years, he has won 86 in his past four, including 70 in the past three.
Nebraska is scheduled to play its first game in the Big Ten tournament on Friday, and then it will set its sights on winning the school’s first-ever NCAA tournament game.
