As the Legislature faces a final vote tomorrow/Thursday on Gov. Jim Pillen’s plan to reduce property taxes, a coalition of mostly business groups is voicing strong opposition.

The group, including grocers, broadcasters, convenience stores and others, says in a letter to the governor the proposal will mean “thousands of dollars in increased costs for businesses, and hundreds of dollars for the average Nebraska families.”

The bill would impose sales tax on currently exempt items ranging from pop and candy to veterinary services for pets.

The money raised would go to schools to help cut property taxes by about 22 percent, Pillen’s budget office says.

Senators voted 28-14 to advance the bill last week. But 33 votes would be needed if opponents filibuster to stop it.
