Family Day with 'Jamming on the Job'

This event is free, but registration is required due to limited space.
Registration may be full, but all families are welcome to join us for a fun-filled day of games and hands-on activities! A waitlist will be available for performances in case spots open up. Check out a real fire truck, try out our radio booth and TV studios, and explore lots of other cool activities.
Lincoln will be under an extreme heat watch during the hours of the event. Heat related illnesses increase during extreme heat and high humidity. We will monitor the situation and take precautions to move outdoor activities inside as necessary. Please plan to bring your own water and sun protection.
Rock out and experience future careers with Christina Sanabria and Andrés Salguero from 123 Andrés, plus musician Pierce Freelon as BoomBox. The trio stars in the PBS KIDS podcast Jamming on the Job, where kids meet grown-ups with different kinds of jobs. The Nebraska band The String Beans will also perform for families. Attendees are welcome to come and go throughout the event for the musical performances and family-friendly, hands-on activities.
All families are welcome at this event, but activities are designed for children ages 3+.
Families are asked to register for just one Jamming on the Job performance. You may also register for the performance of The String Beans. Performance times:

- Noon CT The String Beans
- 1 p.m. CT Jamming on the Job - 123 Andrés & Pierce Freelon
There will also be three food trucks on site during the event. Food will be available for purchase from Ana’s Pupusas, Kona Ice and Papi Churros.
Family Day with Jamming on the Job is supported by Nebraska Bank of Commerce and several local businesses providing hands-on, career-based activities for children, including Bluestem Health, Levander’s Body Shop, LOVB Omaha, Lux Center for the Arts, Nebraska Recycling Council, North Creek Family Dentistry, Scooter’s Coffee, Sower Books and Speedway Motors

Celebrating Nebraska Pollinators

Nebraska Public Media partnered with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Bee Lab for programming inspired by My Garden of a Thousand Bees, the 40th-season-premiere episode of Nature on PBS.

Hero Elementary Virtual Family Science Event

This online event screened an episode of the PBS KIDS series Hero Elementary and did simple science experiments led by Nebraska’s Lead PBS Digital Innovator Allison Pontious of Oakdale Elementary in Omaha.

Here are the instructions for the three science experiments featured in this event:
- Walking Water - we added one more color, which meant two more cups, in our version!
- Skittles Experiment
- Soap Experiment - also with bonus instructions on how to make artwork with your soap!
Equipment needed:
- 1 notebook for writing down your observations
- 1 pen or pencil
- Room temperature water
- Hot water
- 5 clear plastic or glass cups
- 4 paper towels
- Red, blue, and yellow liquid food coloring
- 1 bag of Skittles
- 2 large heat-safe plates
- 1 bar of Ivory soap. Be sure to use Ivory brand, because other brands will not work!
