In The Deed The Glory: Memorial Stadium
Air Date: 08/13/2023
Memorial Stadium, home of the Nebraska Cornhusker football team, is a mecca of college football. Whether the team is performing well or in the doldrums, Husker fans still flock to the stadium. Opposing teams and their fans revel in the experience of being inside this college football institution.
"I think the university and others have done a wonderful job of really preserving what makes this place special and doing it in a really tasteful and thoughtful way", says Nebraska Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts. "It had been easy to cover up a lot of things as you looked at the expansion and bringing these amenities, but I love the fact that I can still go down in the concourse and go on the outside of the hundred-year-old facade and still see the sign that says 'Through these gates pass the greatest fans in the world'."
As the stadium celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023, Nebraska Public Media Sports’ new program will look at the construction of the stadium and its evolution from its original east and west stands in 1923 to an 85,000-plus capacity venue built to satisfy the diehard fans. Through interviews with former players and coaches, historians and sports reporters, we’ll uncover the history of Memorial Stadium just as the Nebraska Athletic Department puts the final touches on their new football facility, seated next to the venerable venue.
