A Promise Kept
Air Date: 11/13/2011
In 1877, during the forced relocation of the Ponca Tribe from their homeland in Nebraska to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), a small infant named White Buffalo Girl died. Her father, Black Elk, pleaded with the Neligh townspeople to help bury his daughter. The town not only buried the little girl, the community pledged to watched over and maintain White Buffalo Girl's grave. They've kept their promise for over one hundred years and recently, the Ponca and Omaha Tribes honored the community of Neligh with a thank you ceremony.
