Blizzard Voices of 1888
Nebraska Stories
Air Date: 05/06/2009
January 12, 1888 began as an unseasonably warm day, but by nightfall the temperatures fell to more than 30 degrees below zero as a huge snowstorm blanketed the Great Plains. The blizzard raged for three days and by its end, 235 lives were lost. Among the dead were many children who became lost on their way home from school. Poet Ted Kooser reads a poem from a collection of poems he wrote based on the recorded reminiscences of survivors.
