Darrell Scott: It's a Great Day to Be Alive

Jam

Air Date: 08/31/2026

After a week of debilitating back pain, Darrell Scott wrote “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” from the sheer relief of sitting upright again. Warm, playful and a little wistful, the song comes alive through Scott’s expressive vocals and deft, resonant Weissenborn playing. It was later made famous by Travis Tritt, whose version became a major country hit. Four-time Grammy nominee Darrell Scott has been called “a musician’s musician and songwriter’s songwriter” and “a master wordsmith” whose songs have become part of the roots-music vernacular. A recipient of the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Scott is known for deeply personal, finely crafted songs rooted in family, place and lived experience.
