In the landscapes of Nebraska, often with no markings or outsider recognition, lie sacred places. Pahuku, near Fremont, is considered the most sacred site of the Pawnee tribe who lived in Nebraska. Sacred sites are places where a supreme being conferred miraculous powers on animals to act as messengers to Native Americans. The animals were known as Nahurac. Sacred sites were also used as prayer sites, and training sites for tribal doctors. The famous doctor dance, which contemporary Pawnee Native Americans still perform today, would happen in these places. Other sacred sites are near Guide Rock, Central City, and Nance County near the confluence of the Loop and Cedar Rivers.
