The Nebraska Hall of Fame was established in 1961, with the induction of George Norris, as a way to officially recognize prominent Nebraskans. The process of determining who can be inducted has changed through the years, but since 1998 the rules state that no more than one person can be added every five years. Candidates will not be inducted until at least thirty-five years after their deaths. Busts of the inductees are displayed at the state capitol. Currently there are twenty-five members, with another to be selected this year. Nebraska medal of honor recipients are also members of the hall of fame. Seventy-three Nebraskans have been awarded that nation’s highest military honor. A plaque honoring them is on display on the fourteenth floor of the capitol building.
