Rising alone within the Oglala National Grassland, this ancient butte preserves fossils dating back 45 million years. Early settlers named it Sugar Loaf Butte, inspired by its likeness to the cone-shaped loaves of white sugar once common on the frontier. It's said that when the sun and atmospheric conditions are just right, the butte shines white like sugar.
