After being at political loggerheads, the Nebraska Legislature gave first-round approval to a new congressional map.
Debate over the two proposed plans for congressional redistricting largely focused on how to divide the Omaha metro area, which because of its population size, straddles two congressional districts. As Nebraska's urban centers continue to grow, the second and first congressional districts must become more compact to ensure the three congressional districts are equal in population.
The compromise keeps Douglas County whole, but it also includes Saunders County. Once again, Sarpy County is divided between multiple congressional districts.
