The University of Nebraska Medical Center has officially opened a new 192,000 square foot, high-tech simulation training facility that will provide hands-on education to medical students. The Davis Global Center on UNMC’s campus in Omaha includes a 20-bed quarantine unit that was first used earlier this year to treat COVID-19 patients. UNMC Chancellor Dr. Jeffrey Gold says the facility allows students to learn without fear of harming patients.

“When I trained, failure frequently meant disability for patients, longer procedures and tragically, even loss of life and so failure was unacceptable,” Dr. Gold said. “In a simulated environment, failure is actually looked for because we want people to learn how to do things better, we want them to take chances, we want them to innovate.”
The Davis Global Center houses a replicated health care system, including a trauma room, intensive care unit and labor and delivery rooms. University of Nebraska President Ted Carter was at the virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday and said he was proud of the new facility.
“Today marks the day the University of Nebraska Medical Center has declared it is truly the epicenter for student medical education and how we’re going to develop that going into the future,” Carter said.
The Davis Global Center has been operational since earlier this year.
