Because of COVID-19 concerns, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said December’s commencement ceremony will be online instead of in-person. The decision left some seniors disappointed, but not shocked.
The celebration will be live-streamed on December 19, the same day undergraduate ceremonies were originally scheduled.
Karin Ellefson is a senior advertising and public relations major at UNL, and president of The Circle, a student organization run by the College of Journalism and Mass Communications
"Obviously, I'm a little bit bummed out because it’s commencement and that's what you kind of look forward to after you graduate," Ellefson said. "But, I wasn't too upset because I was kind of anticipating that decision."
All May, August, and December 2020 graduates are invited to participate in future in-person commencements with special recognition. For Ellefson, that will be too late.
"Well, I'm actually planning on moving to Seattle in January, so I probably won't be attending the in-person," Ellefson said.
December 2020 graduates will receive a Go Big Grad Celebration box that includes a complimentary cap, tassel and Husker-themed souvenirs.
