The University of Nebraska at Kearney is designating next week “Justice Week.” UNK’s chapter of International Justice Mission is sponsoring its seventh annual “Justice Week” to combat human trafficking.

The week will included multiple events, all of which are open to the public. The members of International Justice Mission will take a 24-hour stand at UNK’s bell tower and show documentaries to educate people on human trafficking. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson will deliver the keynote speech on Monday night.

Jase Hueser, president of the International Justice Mission, said the purpose of the week is to raise awareness in the Kearney area.

“And it will be important for business leaders and community members to be reminded that first of all, trafficking does happen here in Nebraska," Heuser said. "But second of all, we can’t just dwell in the awareness; we have to try to take action and there’s many ways that people can do that. One, just contributing to spreading the message and two, getting involved with organizations that deal with this issue.”

Hueser cited The Sherwood Foundation and Women’s Fund of Omaha study, which states 900 people are trafficked in Nebraska each month. To learn more about sex trafficking in Nebraska, you can watch two “Sold for Sex” documentaries produced by NET News.
