Train derails near Gothenburg, cleanup underway

Cleanup efforts are underway following a train derailment near Gothenburg that took place early Tuesday morning.

Roughly 31 Union Pacific train cars carrying coal derailed just before 2 a.m., according to a spokesperson for Union Pacific.

Crews are in the area cleaning up after the derailment, and one of the three tracks near the site is back open.

A spokesperson for Union Pacific says the cause of the incident is still unknown and no HAZMAT material was released.

According to federal data, in 2022 Union Pacific reported two other rail incidents that took place on tracks near Gothenburg.
