Teresa Ewins will be Lincoln’s next chief of police and will be the first woman in the position. Lincoln City Council voted 7-0 on Monday to approve Ewins.

Brian Jackson is the department’s acting chief of police and says Ewins drew support from a pool of qualified candidates.

“Representing the men and women of the Lincoln Police Department, we have, with some confidence, support the selection of Teresa Ewins as the next chief of police for the Lincoln Police Department,” he said. "She stood out, and I think it was with great consensus that we believe that she is appropriate for this role.”

The city council’s vote was the final step in the process of selecting the newest police chief. Previously, Lincoln’s Police Union recommended Ewins and so did Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird.

Ewins will begin as chief of police in Lincoln on August 30. She previously was a commander at the San Francisco Police Department in California.
