The Nebraska Department of Education says summer school could include in-person classes as districts across the state begin to plan for what learning might look like in the fall. K-12 campuses have been closed since March and most schools have shifted to remote learning. Districts might try something similar to what daycare centers are allowed to do right now in the summer.
“Small groups of under ten students coming together and staying segmented in the school, not crossing over,” David Jespersen, Nebraska Department of Education spokesman said. “Having lunch at the school, in their rooms, not groups in the cafeteria and handling summer school that way.”
Districts across the state are encouraged to plan for a number of different learning scenarios in the fall, including a mix of remote learning and classroom instruction.
“We would love to be able to tell everyone that it’s safe and everyone can get back to school like normal,” Jespersen said. “But the reality is everyone has to come up with some sort of plans that might include a mixture of online learning and in-person learning. It might include all in-person learning or it might include all online learning, similar to what we have going on right now.”
The Department of Education is expected to release official summer school guidance for districts in the next several weeks.
