The White House Office of Management and Budget announced Monday it would pause federal grants and loans, making federal dollars inaccessible for multiple programs across the country.
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen's office released a statement Tuesday saying that President Trump is following through on campaign trail promises.
“President Trump promised the American people he would rein in federal spending that was out of step with their priorities. He is clearly making good on that promise,” Communications Director Laura Strimple said in the statement. “Our administration is working with state agencies and our federal partners to evaluate the impacts of the OMB memo and will provide additional input in the days and weeks ahead.”
Jane Kleeb, party chair for the Nebraska Democratic Party, said in a statement Tuesday she worries that the pausing of federal funds is putting many groups at risk by stopping funding for programs aimed at children in need, veterans and senior citizens.
“Republicans are literally cutting off funding for hungry kids and critical programs that veterans and seniors rely on in our communities,” Kleeb said. "That is the state of play right now and not a peep from our federal delegation on the potential harm and confusion the Trump Administration is causing to our most vulnerable in Nebraska."
