Nebraska State Fair officials say they’re still planning on holding the event starting at the end of August, but realize there are major pandemic-related obstacles that could change those plans.

The fair’s board met Friday on Zoom and discussed logistics for the event, which is scheduled to start August 28th in Grand Island. Like many other fairs across the country, the Nebraska State Fair isn’t sure what’s ahead.

“We’re really trying to balance safety with just the financial reality,” State Fair Board Chair Beth Smith said. “The fair most likely will not look like the fair has always looked. So, can we look at these different options and still make it work financially for us.”

The Nebraska State Fair has faced controversy and financial uncertainty over the past few years. Earlier this week, Governor Pete Ricketts said the State Fair would likely be much different than normal if it is allowed to move forward this year because of coronavirus concerns.

The board also voted to hire a new executive director. Bill Ogg currently runs the fair in Walla Walla, Washington and replaces Lori Cox, who left the job earlier this year. Ogg was a finalist for the job three years ago. Details of his contract are still pending board approval.
