Sioux County High School officials announced the school won’t field a varsity girls basketball team this season.

The panhandle school in Harrison is at least the sixth in Nebraska to cancel all or part of a varsity schedule, in football or girls or boys basketball this year.

Sioux County competes in class D2, the smallest division in the state, but cancellations have impacted schools in class A as well. According to a report from the National Federation of State High Schools Associations, sports participation dropped by 4% from 2018-19 to 2021-22.

In the 2020-21 season, Sioux County finished the season at 14-7. The following year, they earned a 15-10 record.
