A variety of small businesses in Omaha will be closed on Friday as part of a general strike in protest of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
The shutdown strike mission includes, “No work. No school. No shopping. Stop funding ICE.”
“Our doors will not be open; it will be a paid day off for our staff,” Megan Hunt, a Nebraska state senator and owner of Shop Five Nine and Ceremony Shop, said in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday.
Along with Hunt’s stores, the list of Omaha businesses observing the strike includes Felius, Sweet Magnolia’s Bake Shop, Izzy’s Pizza, Dusk Goods & Gifts, Albany and Avers, Tiny House Bar, The Platypus, iDLE Wine & Goods, Sheelytown Market, Made In Omaha and Pop Fiction Bookstore.
Each Omaha business posted to social media announcing its closure related to the strike.
“Since we are a nonprofit, we are managed by a board of directors, and a lot of the decision for us to take part in this national strike simply came from our values as a nonprofit organization,” said Felius founding president Bre Phelan.
Lincoln business STUFF Creative Reuse also posted to FaceBook letting potential customers know the store would be closed on Friday.
