Trunk-or-treat season is in full swing. For some though, the loud noises and flashing lights at events may be overwhelming.

That's where sensory-friendly trunk-or-treating comes in.

A sensory friendly trunk-or-treat takes neurological differences into account through quieter music, no flashing lights and handing out things like fidget toys in addition to candy.

Sensory-friendly events are becoming more popular. Behaven Kids is an Omaha and Lincoln-based organization focused on adolescent behavioral and mental health. Molly Mialander is the Engagement and Outreach Coordinator at Behaven.

“I feel like there has been more sensory friendly events because more people are aware of certain things that these kids who may have autism spectrum disorder or some sort of disability may need to attend certain places in the community or to attend certain events,” Mialander said.

According to Michael Blackstone, Executive Director at the Autism Center of Nebraska, being attentive to details like flashing lights, loud music or large crowds is important for accessibility.

“There are a lot of activities that people and kids would like to be engaged in, but because of their sensory issues, they usually just go with what's more comfortable and that’s just to not do it,” Blackstone said. “So by, I guess the community creating more sensory friendly events, you're going to see more people participating from all walks of life.”

Studies show that sensory inclusivity improves the mental health of those with neurological differences. Behaven will sponsor a sensory friendly trunk-or-treat at Baxter Toyota in Lincoln this Friday from 1-3 p.m.
