Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen is opening up about why he’s running for re-election in 2022.

Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen says he has found the responsibilities of his office rewarding.

He was first elected in 2018 and, if re-elected, he said he would continue to strengthen Nebraska’s economic ties with international trade partners like Bulgaria and potential trading partners like Kuwait.

“These are great markets for Nebraska ag products, but also for Nebraska's financial technology and its medical technology," said Evnen. "These are countries that are doing well and are very open to trade across all of the areas where Nebraskans have wonderful things to offer.” Evnen said he would also continue efforts to strengthen election security and support efforts that would bring voter ID laws to Nebraska, although he said he saw no evidence of election fraud during the 2020 election.

"Why do we put vaults in banks? Why don't we just wait 'till they're robbed and then we can talk about whether we should have put a vault in there or not?" Evnen said. "We ought to stay ahead of this curve, and I'm committed to doing that in ways that make it easy to vote, but hard to cheat."

So far, Evnen is the only one to announce his candidacy. Elections are slated for November of 2022
