The Scottsbluff based "Midwest Skyview Drive-in Theater" celebrates it's one-year anniversary this weekend.
Billy Estes, executive director of the drive-in theater, said they had almost 15,000 patrons in the theater’s first year.
“We could have never asked for what happened last year. I mean the community outpouring and support, both in financial support, attendance support, volunteering support," he said. "It was absolutely heart-warming.”
With the exception of three weekends, Estes said the drive-in had shows every weekend since last June. Peter Rabbit 2 will show Friday, and Florida Georgia Line will perform on Saturday night. The pandemic brought drive-in theaters back into style, and there are now four such theaters in Nebraska, Estes said.
The theater began as a pop-up business, projecting movies onto a truck with the intention of entertaining the community temporarily during the pandemic, but then later received steady support to keep regular shows. Estes said they decided to expand the business and build the drive-in theater in June of last year.
