U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts is a calling for an investigation into the U.S. Secret Service after a second assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump in as many months.

Ricketts said he wants to know why security lapses from the Secret Service occurred in each of the Trump assassination attempts.

“The Secret Service has repeatedly refused to answer simple, specific, direct questions," he said. "Any information gathered about either attempt must be shared with the American people as soon as possible."

Ricketts said the public has the right to know why there hasn’t been better coordination with local law enforcement and why certain locations near the former president were not secured.

“Every Nebraskan and Americans across the country should be confident that all presidential nominees will be protected equally," he said. "I'll do all I can to make sure the Secret Service follows through.”

In July, former U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following criticism of the department’s handling of Trump’s assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

Ricketts also called on Democrats to stop their "violent rhetoric" against Donald Trump, citing Joe Biden's July remark that, "It's time to put Trump in a bullseye."

Biden has since said his comment was a mistake.

Following the second assassination attempt, Vice President Kamala Harris wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she is glad Trump is safe and that violence has no place in America.
