When toe meets leather for the first Husker football home game of the season against Akron on Saturday, it will also be the first time beer meets belly for football fans inside the century-old Memorial Stadium.
Last October, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved a measure that will allow the beer to flow inside the stadium. NU was the final Big Ten school to green light alcohol at football games.
Head coach Matt Rhule expects fans to remain Nebraska nice, similar to other Husker sporting venues already offering booze.
“I go to the baseball games. I go to basketball games. They serve beer there, right?” Rhule said. “I've never seen an unruly crowd. I mean, we have the best fans in sports, so I think people can go have a couple beers at the game.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. The Big Ten Network will carry the broadcast.
“I think our night game atmosphere is elite. I mean, if it's any better, then I'll buy the beer,” Rhule joked.
New concessionaire Aramark will sell multiple domestic and craft beers in cans, along with hard seltzers. All concessions will be cashless for the second season.
For the first time, Memorial Stadium will restrict reentry, in an attempt to limit binge drinking away from the stadium.
In recent years, a Garth Brooks concert and Volleyball Day in Nebraska were the only two events with alcohol sold at Memorial Stadium.
