A unique memorial ceremony was held at the Lincoln Police Station Tuesday morning to honor fallen Investigator Mario Herrera, who passed away on September 7, 2020.

“End of Watch Ride to Remember” is the name of a motorcycle tour put together by an organization called “Beyond the Call of Duty.” This is the second year of the tour.

Jagrut Shah is the founder of the organization and he said they will visit 194 police departments across the country to honor officers who died in 2020.

The organizations trailer is parked along the street. It displays photos of all 339 police officers they honor.

“This year we’re honoring 339 beautiful men and women around the nation, going to their departments and letting the survivors know that their loved one’s won’t be forgotten,” he said, “as well as letting the departments know that their loss is being felt across the nation, not just in one locale, or one town, or one county or state.”

The motorcycle group, which is largely made up of former police officers, travels with a trailer that has a photo of every officer the organization honors.

Brian Jackson is the Acting Police Chief for the Lincoln Police Department and said he’s glad Herrera’s remembrance is a part of the tour.

“He won’t be forgotten here. We’re reminded of him everyday,” he said. “I think it’s good for our staff to be able to be present for events such as this that honor his memory, then we know it’s not just us honoring his memory, it’s everyone.”

Mario Herrera was shot while serving a warrant on August 26, 2020, and passed away nearly two weeks later after multiple blood transfusions.
