Gov. Jim Pillen is asking Nebraskans to contact state senators in support of his ideas for lowering property taxes.

Pillen spoke Friday at a townhall meeting in Bellevue. He repeated his idea of lowering property taxes by means including expanding sales taxes. Lawmakers rejected that in their recently-concluded regular session.

One member of the audience of about 50 on Friday said his neighbors were in danger of being taxed out of their home, and asked the governor about it.

“Is there any place they can go so that they don't have to lose their house?” the man asked.

“They have to call their elected representatives in unicameral so they hear directly, because our members of the unicameral get bombarded by special interests and people being paid a lot to misalign what the truth is,” Pillen replied. “They have to hear from the property taxpayers directly.”

Pillen did not specify how any new plan might differ from the one that lawmakers rejected. But he said they’re working on it, and promised to call a special session to deal with the issue this summer, before school begins.
