A proposal requiring businesses to offer paid sick leave will be on the November ballot.

The Nebraska Secretary of State verified 97,557 signatures from supporters for the measure on Tuesday. If passed, Nebraska businesses will be required to offer at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

Employees in the state can earn 40-56 hours of paid sick leave, depending on the size of the business they work for.

Campaign Manager Jodi Lepaopao said in a Tuesday press release that she sees the support for the initiative carrying through to Nov. 5.

“The overwhelming support that paid sick leave received across the state during signature collection will carry on to Election Day,” Lepaopao said in the press release. “Nebraskans believe that we should reward hard work, not punish people for getting sick. This November, we have a chance to vote for our values and say that no one should have to choose between a paycheck and their health or the health of their family.”

In late June, organizers for the paid sick leave campaign turned in over 138,00 signatures. Nebraska’s Secretary of State’s office verified that there were about 10,000 more signatures than needed to make it on the ballot.
