The National Weather Service in North Platte said a tornado at Lake McConaughy destroyed over 20 buildings, including homes, outbuildings and shops. It also damaged almost 40 homes. No injuries were reported, although several people were rescued from their basements.
Multiple tornados were reported last night across Western Nebraska, including ones that touched down in Keith, Grant, Perkins, Hayes and Lincoln counties. The NWS is planning to release information on the intensity of the tornados later Friday.
Nebraska Game and Parks officials said both Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala will remain open for Memorial Day weekend. The organization wants visitors to be aware of downed trees across the north shore of Lake McConaughy. Power is currently out at two of the campgrounds - Lone Eagle and Sandy Beach - but Game and Parks hopes to have it restored soon.
Both highways to the lakes have reopened after being closed Thursday night.
