The runway and a parking area at Offutt Air Force base near Omaha are going through a major overhaul.
Ryan Hansen with the Air Force Base said some of the 2-mile long runway hadn’t been touched in decades.
“Some of it going back to the 1940s, 1950s,” he said. “We’ve done some repairs, obviously, from here and there but nothing of this scale. This is a full replacement, so in the ‘90s and early 2000s we had a partial replacement but nothing of this magnitude.”
Hansen said the renovation began in March of this year and is on track to finish up around September 2022.
Since February of this year, the air base has been running operations out of the Lincoln Airport.
Hansen says the cost of the renovation will total about $200 million.
