The head of the high school sports governing body in Nebraska says the fall season is still on despite the Big Ten’s decision to postpone athletics because of coronavirus concerns. Nebraska School Activities Association Executive Director Jay Bellar says the league’s decision to cancel the fall football season is concerning, but at this point, high school sports seasons are on track to start this month.
“At this time, all I would say is we are going to move forward,” Bellar said. “We’re going to listen to our schools and we’re going to definitely listen to the health experts that we visit with and we’ll continue to make decisions as they need to be made.”
Bellar says most school districts across the state are in support of playing fall sports. He says the NSAA will continue to monitor the latest data on coronavirus in Nebraska and won’t jeopardize the health of athletes if the situation changes. Omaha Public Schools will not participate in fall sports because of coronavirus concerns.
