Initial claims for unemployment benefits increased by 33.5% last week.

About 6,100 Nebraskans filed for first-time jobless benefits, the highest number in two months. In total, 122,858 people have received benefits since mid-March, including about 53,000 last week.

Starting next week, everyone receiving benefits will have to search for work again. That requirement was temporarily waived during the pandemic.
