Apparently, playing at Wrigley Field isn’t enough of a big deal for the Nebraska volleyball team.
According to a news release from the University of Florida and later confirmed by Nebraska Athletics, the Gators and Huskers will play at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as part of the “Spikes Under the Lights” preseason exhibition tournament.
The two teams will play a three-set semifinal match on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. Central time under the lights at the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Penn State and SMU will play each other in the other semifinal held simultaneously.
The winners will meet for the championship after the first two matches are completed. A press release stated the $1 million prize is the largest ever awarded in women's college sports.
Big Red head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, who's entering her second year leading the program, said in a news release that the Huskers "are excited and honored to be part of this historic event that showcases the continued growth of women's volleyball," she said. "This will be a great opportunity to face some talented teams in an iconic setting as we ramp up to the start of the season. It should be an awesome night and hopefully a lot of Husker fans will be able to experience it with us in Dallas."
The exhibitions will air on a "major national network," Nebraska Athletics said, with details on TV to be announced in the coming weeks.
Tickets for the match will go on sale to the public May 8, with presales starting May 4. More information is available at spikesunderthelights.com.
Nebraska, which set the all-time record attendance for a women’s sporting event with its Volleyball Day in Nebraska in 2023, is already set to play a regular season game in an outdoor stadium, facing Missouri at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Sept. 6.
