The Nebraska State Patrol is mourning one of its own after a trooper was hit and killed by a snowplow while assisting at a crash scene.
Kyle McAcy was responding to a crash on Interstate 80 involving a snowplow and two other vehicles Monday morning. It was one of the 17 crashes and 96 motorists assists the Nebraska State Patrol responded to during Monday’s snowy conditions.
After asking the snowplow driver to move, McAcy went to the other crashed vehicles. The plow reversed and struck McAcy. He died from his injuries on the scene.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the crash. Sarpy County Sheriff Greg London said at a press conference Tuesday that the investigation will take somewhere around one or two months, followed by an assessment by Cass County Attorney Chris Perrone on whether the snowplow driver will face any charges.
Nebraska State Patrol Superintendent John Bolduc in a public statement said “Our NSP family is devastated today. Kyle was a dedicated trooper, a devoted public servant, and most importantly a good friend to many in Omaha and beyond.”
The Nebraska State Patrol website has a page dedicated to McAcy, where details of opportunities for members of the public to pay their respects and to send love to Trooper McAcy's family will be available in the coming days.
