Nebraska Medicine will have a new leader starting in July. After 11 years in leadership roles, Dr. Michael Ash has been promoted from Nebraska Medicine’s Chief Operating Officer to CEO.

The private nonprofit health system announced Thursday that its board of directors unanimously chose Ash to replace previous CEO Dr. James Linder.

Linder is stepping down after seven years as CEO and 40 total years at Nebraska Medicine.

“Age 70 feels like a graceful time to step aside—creating space for a leader with a longer runway, while hopefully leaving me time to pursue other interests,” Linder said in a written statement.

Linder said Ash is ready for the challenge.

“He understands Nebraska Medicine, possesses exceptional health care knowledge, and brings the right motivation to the role,” Linder said. “[Ash] will empower our colleagues to do what’s best for patients.”

Ash said he is grateful for the opportunity to fill a role held by his mentor and friend.

“His innovative approach, unwavering dedication, and philanthropic spirit have left a lasting impact not only on our organization, but on the broader community we serve,” Ash said. “[Linder’s] legacy is one of integrity, service, and excellence and will continue to shape Nebraska Medicine for years to come.”

The position of COO will be filled by Doctor of Pharmacy Kyle Skiermont, who currently serves as Vice President of Operations. Skiermont said he is honored by the opportunity.

“Nebraska Medicine and UNMC are such special places for me,” Skiermont said. “The thousands of extraordinary people who transform lives each day never stop inspiring me. I am truly fortunate to be part of this team.”

The shift in leadership will be official on July 1.
