Today marks the second week of high school football games in Nebraska, and the first week went better than expected.

Most Nebraska high school football teams played the majority of their games last Friday, with only six or seven games that were cancelled due to COVID-related issues. Nebraska School Activities Association assistant director Nate Neuhaus said so far, the plan to play football is working.

“The games that I attended have appeared that the fans, the spectators, the officials, the players are all doing the things they need to do to keep us on the field. So it gave me some optimism leading into the next few weeks.”

Neuhaus said teams are happy to be playing in a season that was in doubt earlier this year. It gives students and fans something to look forward to in the era of COVID-19.

“I think everybody's excited to be playing fall sports. With everything else going on, I think it is really giving people some energy here as you move through these trying times.”

Neuhaus said every school has been able to implement appropriate COVID protocols, with guidance from their local health departments. He said he appreciates what the schools and athletes are doing to make the fall season an early success.
