The coaching carousel is in motion across college football, and Nebraska is no exception.
On Wednesday, the program announced Daikiel Shorts Jr. as the next wide receivers coach. Shorts worked with new offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen, at West Virginia and Houston where Holgorsen was a head coach. He also played receiver at West Virginia, with Holgorsen leading the program.
Most recently, Shorts worked at Kentucky in the same role. The news means that former receivers coach, Garett McGuire, was moved out of the position, with no official comment released on the coach's status.
On Monday, Nebraska signed offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen to a two-year deal paying him a salary of $1.2 million, the school announced.
The new coordinator coached three games in November. Holgorsen took over for Marcus Satterfield who was relegated to tight ends coach.
In Holgorsen’s three games leading the offense, the Huskers delivered an uneven output. They scored a season-high 44 points against Wisconsin to clinch a bowl berth. But the Big Red also scored no more than 20 in the other matchups.
In a written statement, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said, “Dana is one of the elite offensive minds in football, and the progress we made in our final three games provides a glimpse of the potential of our offense under his direction.
“We look forward to Dana leading our offense into the bowl game and building for the 2025 season," Rhule said.
On the other side of the ball, Nebraska’s defensive coordinator is heading south.
Defensive coordinator Tony White is taking the defensive coordinator position at Florida State, according to a report from the Omaha World-Herald.
In his two years at Nebraska, White’s defenses ranked in the top 20 in points allowed per game.
The Cornhuskers gave up 18.3 points per game in 2023 and surrendered 19.8 points per game this season.
NU’s rush defense was especially stout last season. It ranked third in the Big Ten with 93 opponent rushing yards per game.
This season, the Huskers allowed 106 rushing yards and 207 passing yards per game. The Blackshirt pass defense ranked 10th in the Big Ten.
White takes over the Florida State defense which struggled this year — allowing 28 points per game.
The Big Red await their bowl placement after a 6-6 regular season.
