A Nebraska congressman said what happened during the attack on the U.S. Capitol one year ago was wrong.

Republican Don Bacon represents Nebraska’s second congressional district, which covers the greater Omaha area. Bacon said the attacks on the Capitol from a year ago are being downplayed by a group of Republicans and used as a prism to push legislation by a group of Democrats. Bacon said both viewpoints are weakening the country.

“Whether you're trying to minimize or you're trying to exploit it, I think it's both wrong. I'd rather just have candor,” Bacon said. “What happened that day was wrong, and we got to protect our country... We live in a superpower {with} the city on the hill, the shining city on the hill for democracy and freedom, but this hyper partisanship hurts our great country. And a year ago, that was evidence of it.”

The congressman said a recent push to federalize the country’s voting system would not be effective.

Bacon said the United States has honored a respectful transition of power after an election and a constitutional right to peacefully protest. He says any violence under these circumstances is unacceptable.
