More than 100 new laws ranging from paid sick leave issues to regulations regarding trans athletes take effect in Nebraska Wednesday, Sept. 3.
Under the Nebraska Constitution, most bills passed by the Legislature take effect three months after the session ends. For the session that ended in early June, that’s Wednesday. Although some have delayed implementation dates.
Among the laws taking effect is one that will exempt businesses with 10 or fewer employees from having to provide paid sick leave. Voters approved sick leave for employees of all-sized businesses in 2024, but the Legislature changed that. The new law takes effect Oct. 1.
On one controversial social issue, transgender athletes in schools and colleges will now be prohibited from participating in sports on teams not corresponding to their sex at birth.
Also, minors under age 18 will now need parental permission to establish social media accounts. That takes effect next July 1. Meanwhile, that law could be challenged in court.
