Small Businesses Against Tariffs launched a million-dollar campaign Wednesday morning featuring billboards and digital ads across Lincoln and Omaha. The campaign focuses on how tariffs have made life more expensive and hit agricultural communities the hardest.

A similar effort was launched in June that put up billboards in Nebraska that focused on rising gas prices under President Trump. This is the second string of billboards being planted in Nebraska ahead of the midterms that has targeted major policy impacts in Trump's second term.

Small Businesses Against Tariffs is a registered 501c3, meaning it does not have to disclose its funding sources, and is backed by the Defending Democracy Together Institute, which is based in Washington D.C.

Kim Daniels, a small business customs broker based in D.C. who works with the campaign, said while larger companies were able to raise prices to weather the storm, her clients, who are mostly small business owners, couldn’t raise prices because they needed to stay competitive. These small businesses were the hardest hit by tariffs, she said.

“We've had a few clients go out of business, unfortunately, because the cost of the tariffs just cost them their business, they just couldn't afford it,” Daniels said.

Daniels added that many of her clients either went out of business or had big layoffs. One company told her they replaced their human workers with robots since they couldn’t afford the humans anymore.

“The United States did not make money on this, or at least not the United States people,” Daniels said. “U.S. people made no money on this. U.S. people paid to the government all of these extra costs. It was not paid by other countries at all.”

The Nebraska GOP did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.

Small Businesses Against Tariffs spokespeople said that when the United States raises tariffs, trading partners retaliate by taxing American farm exports. That makes the agricultural products in the United States more expensive. They add that tariffs are a choice and the ad campaign is centered around educating Americans about the impacts of tariffs so they can support policies that are better for the economy and small businesses.
