The Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission held a public hearing attended by several frustrated advocates on Thursday. Many commenters felt the commission is putting up too many restrictions. Among them was Lia Post.
“Stopping the will of the people, stopping the freedom of full plant use, stopping the freedom of choice of how I best use my medications, that is the legacy of the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission,” Post said.
Regulations include restrictions on parts of a marijuana plant that may be used, THC limits and licensures for doctors prescribing the drug as a treatment. Advocates for medical marijuana called these burdensome, and worried about a lack of regulations for patient privacy.
Advocates like Angela Cornett believe the commissioners are straying from the law Nebraskans voted for in 2024 and that the rules keep doctors from being able to help their patients.
“Overregulation will prevent doctors from being able to meet their patients’ specific needs,” Cornett said.
The commissioners took no action on the comments. The commission is scheduled to meet again on March 16.
