Construction began Monday to renovate the Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area near Ogallala, Nebraska. The project includes adding what Nebraska Game and Parks Commission calls a water trail.

Colby Johnson with the commission explained what a water trail is.

“A motorized water trail is a marked trail on navigable waters that boaters can come out and use,” he said. “Think of it like a hiking trail except instead of walking it, you would use it in a motorized boat.”

Johnson said the idea is growing in popularity around the country. The concept will add more boat ramps to the state’s largest reservoir, while providing directions and guides to points of interest on the water and shores.

Johnson said the project will be a work in progress in terms of providing directions but the commission expects the new entry points to be complete around Memorial Day next year.
