Lincoln Public Schools is moving forward with plans for in-person classes, amid three instances of teachers testing positive ahead of the first day of classes.

Eric Weber, Associate Superintendent for Human Resources, said the district worked with the health department to identify close contacts of those teachers and ensure proper steps were taken. Weber says a similar process will occur if a teacher or student in a building tests positive during in-person instruction. He says all LPS students have the option to opt-in to the remote learning plan at any time based on their family’s circumstances.

"That’s one of the ways that our plan is different than a lot of plans that you’ll see across the country is that it will allow for some fluidity and it does allow for some flexibility for families because we know circumstances can change,” Weber said.

Weber said over 7,000 students, nearly 17.5% of the district, have registered for the remote learning option. He said the district has been pleased with the partnership with the health department.

LPS announced Monday in-person classes will begin on August 12 while remote learners will now start on August 17.
